Voices of Change: IUS Hosts 4th International Youth Conference on Language, Literature, and Education

On Friday, October 4, 2024, the International University of Sarajevo (IUS) hosted the "4th International Youth Conference in Language, Literature, and Education - Voices of Change." The event was organized by the English Language and Literature Teaching (ELT) and English Language and Literature (ELIT) programs at IUS.

The conference aimed to provide a platform for young undergraduate and graduate students from the arts, humanities, and social sciences to explore and promote contemporary trends in language learning, multiculturalism, and the values of freedom and democracy in today’s world. A central theme was the importance of fostering strong critical thinking skills among youth to build a brighter and more prosperous future.

In addition to focusing on language as a means of communication, the conference emphasized that language is a powerful tool for positive change. It is through language that humans connect, exchange ideas, and advocate for a better world. The event underscored the responsibility of the younger generation to be the voices of change, striving for a better future for all.

The opening speech was delivered by Asst. Prof. Dr. Nadira Puškar-Mustafić, who welcomed attendees and highlighted the importance of youth in driving positive social change. She also thanked all participants and organizers for their support.

The first plenary speaker, Associate Professor Dr. Ana Kocić-Stanković from the University of Niš, Serbia, delivered a talk titled "The Voices of (Ex)Change in Contemporary American Literature." She discussed Percival Everett's reimagining of Mark Twain's Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn in James, where previously invisible characters are given a voice, emphasizing the role of education and writing in addressing past injustices.

The second plenary speaker, Associate Professor Dr. Mirzana Pašić-Kodrić from the Faculty of Education at the University of Sarajevo, focused on "The Role of Foreign Languages in Building and Nurturing Intercultural Sensibility." She highlighted the importance of learning foreign languages as a means of fostering intercultural understanding, personal growth, and development.

Following the plenary speeches, the conference continued with two sessions where participants presented their academic papers, exploring topics related to language, multiculturalism, and the role of positive change in shaping a better future.
