ELIT Students Bring Shakespeare's Works to Life in 'The Reading Theatre'

On Tuesday, May 28, 2024, students in ELIT415 Shakespeare course took part in celebration of the Bard’s poetic and theatrical arts. In “The Reading Theatre”, they performed excerpts from the plays studied this semester – The Merchant of Venice, Julius Caesar and The Tempest. Their performances were exceptional – they paid so much attention to the music of the language, including body language and facial expressions in their acting.  Some of the students even had home-made costumes to add flair to this extraordinary experience. The audience indulged and “released them from their bands with the help of their good hands” (as invited by Prospero in the Epilogue to The Tempest).

The performing students were:

Alperen Sapmaz – Shylock’s monologue, Act III, Scene 1 from The Merchant of Venice

Batin Kutsal Yavuz – Portia’s speech, Act IV, Scene 1 from The Merchant of Venice

Dženeta Baković, Lamija Brdarević and Lejla Hrvačić – the Court scene in ACT IV, Scene 1 – Shylock, Portia and Antonio from The Merchant of Venice

Ajla Avdić and Emina Palavra – Brutus and Cassius dialogue, Act I, Scene 2 from Julius Caesar

Maida Avdić – Calpurnia’s monologue, Act II, Scene 2 from Julius Caesar

Tajra Bijedić – Brutus’ speech, Act III Scene 1 from Julius Caesar

Maksim Salmin – Mark Antony's speech, Act III, Scene 2 from Julius Caesar

Merjem Lavić – Caliban's monologue, Act III, Scene 2 from The Tempest
